Going All Day – Or, How to Fix Your iOS Battery Woes

Battery life is one of the most crucial specs when it comes to any electronic device, and iOS devices tout some of the best claims in the business. But what do you do when you’re not getting anywhere close to the advertised claims? Obviously usage patterns vary, but a growing number of people are noticing drastically reduced battery life when a device is in standby most of the day.

So how do you fix it? Continue reading…

The Bandwagon – Or, Why the Hell isn’t the U.S. Women’s Team Trending?

3:30 PM: As I was browsing the web I noticed the US Women’s Team isn’t trending on Twitter. This surprises me considering they just pulled off a pretty cool second half comeback against France just a few hours ago. This is interesting because it seems only a few months ago Twitter was fail-whaling left and right because of the massive amount of tweets were being pushed from all over the world when the Men’s World Cup was going on. The entire duration of the tournament. Admittedly, I didn’t switch my Country setting to see if the Women’s World Cup was trending in other parts of the world, but I can’t shake this feeling that there should be something about the Women’s World Cup too. Look at everything Japan has done, shocking Germany and fighting their way to the semis despite the fact there was a devastating earthquake in their country about four months ago. Doesn’t the world love a good story to jump on? First World Problems – Or, Innovation is Spoiling Us in the Best Way Possible

Think about the last time you bought something online. If you’re like most people on the internet, chances are that shipping charges factored heavily into your decision of what product to buy. At work, people are constantly asking if shipping is included for an online order. Before the days of Zappos and Amazon Prime, shipping was a normal, expected expense when purchasing something from an online retailer. Now people scoff at the idea of paying for shipping, sometimes going so far as to buy from the competition because they offer free shipping. Continue reading…

The Great Debate – Or, Why Social Media Isn’t Being Taken Seriously

So I’m departing from my quasi-consistent schedule of posting on Sunday night.  Partly for an assignment as part of a final, partly because I found this video a few weeks ago and I think it’s very indicative of how much controversy social media is garnering. Continue reading…

Growing Pains – Or, Why Tumblr’s Downtime Wasn’t That Big of a Deal

I feel for Tumblr. Being a fledgling site myself, I understand their pain. Granted, I don’t have a ridiculous amount of users that post ridiculous amounts of content, but I can imagine what downtime felt for them. Heck, I freak out when a page 404s for a few minutes, much less an entire platform going down for 24+ hours.

Convergence – Or, How Dwolla is Going to Take Over the World

OK, back to normal.  Even though almost half of my posts have been related to death, I don’t this want to become the “death blog,” even if Justin Wise thinks it’s an untapped niche on the internet.

Let’s talk convergence.  Not necessarily in the journalism sense, although I’m sure I’ll at least partially cover that in this post.  What I’m more interested in is the idea of the digital and “real” worlds meshing together to create something pretty incredible.  As usual, I’ll illustrate my point in the form of a story.

Customer Service on the Internet – Or, what drinking at a laundromat taught me about social media.

I’ll admit it right away, I’m a messy person. I usually pull myself together to look presentable and professional, but the majority of my life I’ve been wading through piles of dirty dishes and wrinkled clothes.  Since I’m trying to work on my character flaws, I decided to stuff every piece of clothing I own into trash bags to take down to a local laundromat to get everything done in one fell swoop, regardless of the fact that I have a washer/dryer in my bathroom, free to use whenever I please.  I figured it’d be easier to spend the money to get the monstrosity that was my dirty laundry taken care of in a few hours as opposed to wrestling with a seemingly never ending cluster of clothes for the next four weeks.  So I threw everything into Elizabeth (my ’07 Sonata) and headed to Duds ‘N Suds.
